An Empirical Investigation of the Relationship between Stock Market Prices Volatility and Macroeconomic Variables’ Volatility in Nigeria

[Abstract] [Full-Text PDF] [html]

Abstract: This study was an inquiry into the link between stock market prices volatility and macroeconomic variables’ volatility in Nigeria. This was motivated due to irrefutable conclusion as inferred from previous work on the subject matter. The research work made use of monthly data for a period of January 1990 – December 2014 and employed GARCH(1,1) models, and the relationship between stock market prices volatility and macroeconomic volatilities was examined using bi-variate and multivariate VAR Granger causality tests as well as through regression analysis. However, the stance of the study was not far from the view of previous studies as only three out of the five macroeconomic variables studied have a relationship with stock market prices volatility based on the result from GARCH (1,1) model, the volatility in GDP, inflation and money supply were not found to Granger-cause and not significantly related to stock market prices volatility but only volatility in interest rate and exchange rate does Granger -cause stock market prices volatility; while from the regression analysis, only interest rate volatility and exchange rate are significantly related to stock market prices volatility. This finding is admissible in the case of developing countries with the supremacy of non-institutional investors and the existence of information asymmetry problem among investors which could account for the weak relationship between stock market prices volatility and macroeconomic variables’ volatility.

Effect of Girdling, Paclobutrazol and Application Date on Blooming, Fruiting and Fruit Quality of Manzanillo Olive Trees

[Abstract] [Full-Text PDF] [html]

Abstract: A field experiment was carried out during 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014 seasons on fourteen years old Manzanillo olive trees grown at El Maghara Station of Desert Research Center, North Sinai Governorate Egypt. This work aimed to study the effect of girdling and paclobutrazol foliar sprayed at two different concentrations, i.e. 500 and 1000 ppm and their application dates namely mid – June or mid – Nov. in the year prior to an expected “Off” years and their combinations on flowering, yield and fruit quality traits. Conclusively, girdling done in mid – June prior to “Off” year increased No. of flowers / panicles, perfect flowers % and fruit retention %. Moreover, girdling done in mid-Nov. Prior “Off” year improved No. of panicles / shoot, yield, fruit weight and pulp thickness in “Off” years (2012 and 2014). In additions, girdling done in mid-June improved yield, fruit weight and pulp thickness in “On” years (2011 and 2013). Furthermore, girdling done in mid- Nov. prior to “Off” year enhanced pulp/fruit weight % in the 2012 season. Girdling done in mid-June enhanced pulp/fruit weight % in “On” year (2013). Paclobutrazol at 1000 ppm done in mid-Nov. Prior to “Off” year minimized alternative bearing of olive trees. The results of our research support the hypothesis that olive flower induction occurs around the time of endocarp sclerification.

Energy Hubs’ Structural and Operational Linear Optimization with Energy Storage Elements

[Abstract] [Full-Text PDF] [html]

Abstract:. In this paper a robust optimization problem ofan energy hub operations is presented. An energy hub is amulti-generation system where multiple energy carriers inputto the hub are converted, stored and distributed in order tosatisfy energy demands. The solution to energy hub operationproblem determines the energy carriers to be purchased andstored in order to satisfy the energy requests while minimizinga cost function. A control approach using Robust Optimization(RO) techniques is proposed; bounded uncertainties on energyhub parameters are taken into account and RO methods areexploited to gain robust solutions which are feasible for allvalues, or foraselected subset, of uncertain data. Simulationresults underline the benefits resulting from the application ofthe proposed approach to an energy hub structure located inWaterloo, Canada.

Improvement Production of Eggplant under Siwa Oasis Conditions

[Abstract] [Full-Text PDF] [html]

Abstract: The field work was carried out at the Experimental Farm of the Desert Research Center at Siwa Oasis, Marsa Matroh Governorate, during the two consecutive seasons of 2013/2014 and 2014/2015. The experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of soil amendments i.e., humic acid at the rate of (1kg/fed.) and fulvic acid at the rate of (1kg/fed.) and three commercial anti-transpiration products i.e., phospho X, anti-cool and green miracle as foliar application on growth, yield and chemical composition of eggplant plants, Blake beauty cv. grown in sandy soil conditions. Results revealed that the highest values of growth, yield parameters, N (%) and Fe content were cleared with humic acid application, no significant differences were found between humic and falvic acid on most parameters. The highest values of plant height and weight recorded with green miracle at the rate of 5m/L. The highest values of number of stems/plant and shoot dry matter were recorded with anti cool at the rate of 2m/L. foliar spray treatments surpassed significantly in chlorophyll content when compared with control treatment. Green miracle at the both rates (2.5 and 5 m/l) increased significantly on fruit number and weight, plant yield and total yield as compared with control treatment. Moreover, Phospho X treatment at the rate of 1.5 m/L surpassed significant on P (%) and Fe (ppm) content. Anatomy of leaves indicated that there were effected for both soil amendments and spray application on all investigated leaves anatomy parameters.

Cyclic Variations of the Enzymatic Activity in Endometrial Secretions during an Estrous Cycle of the Cow

[Abstract] [Full-Text PDF] [html]

Abstract: An analysis of collected uterine secretions of the matrices of the bovine females related to five enzymes (aldolase, glucose-6-phosphodéshydrogénase (G-6-PDH), the sorbitol deshydrogenase (SDH), oxaloacetic glutamic transaminase (TGO) and pyruvic glutamic transaminase (TGP)). Our statistical analyses showed no significant cyclic variations of the activity of these enzymes in the uterine secretions; but they nevertheless have a tendency to be different between the two phases of which:
– The activity of the aldolase is slightly high during the estrogenic phase that in there progesteronic phase (8.618±1.539UI/L vs 6.253±1.138UI/L)
– The G-6-PDH presents a larger activity at the progesteronic phase (2.295±0.809ÚI/L vs 4.938±1.761UI/L)
– The SDH is higher during the estrogenic phase (0.2990±0.0647 UI/L vs 0.220±0.03ÚI/L)
– Concerning transaminases (TGO and TGP) they present a light rise during the follicular phase
The variations observed can be the result of a regulation of the cel metabolism on the level of the uterus by the ovaries hormones.

A Relook at the Efficacy of Persian and English Subtitled Movies on the Improvement of EFL Incidental Vocabulary Retention

[Abstract] [Full-Text PDF] [html]

Abstract: The main aim of this study is to investigate the impacts that Persian and English subtitles have on incidental vocabulary retention. Fifty four participants were randomly assigned to one of the three following conditions: (a) watching an English movie with original language and without subtitles (non-subtitling), (b) watching the same movie with original language and native language in subtitles (standard subtitling), and (c) watching the movie with foreign language in subtitles and native language (reversed subtitling). The study was carried out using a 40- minute-long episode of a drama film about a person who is exorcist. This study has two variables. The variables of the study were a dependent variable (incidental vocabulary learning) and an independent variable (the impact of Persian and English subtitle). First of all, a modified version of [1] Vocabulary Levels Test (VLT) and a kind of listening test were administered to ensure the homogeneity of the participants. After homogenized, pre-test was given to the participants. Finally post-test including a word-form recognition test, a multiple-choice test, and a meaning by translation test was given to the participants. To this end, three tests were adopted from [2]. The result of ANOVA revealed that there was statistical significant difference among three groups in vocabulary learning. The results of the study showed that the third method i.e. reversed subtitling was the most effective method. The results were evidently suggestive of the important role of subtitled movies in vocabulary learning. This study has implications for language teachers to take into consideration the significance of subtitled movies in classrooms.
